The Risks

If people are exposed to asbestos, it can be fatal. In fact, thousands of workers die from asbestos related diseases each year.

Many buildings built before the year 2000, used asbestos in their construction because it was cheap, strong, and heat and flame resistant. But at that stage, the harmful effects were relatively unknown.

Whilst it’s banned today in the UK, if older buildings containing asbestos are disturbed – they can release dangerous fibres which people can inhale. Asbestos can be found in things like: floor tiles, ceilings, lagging, and roofing felt.

Building owners and managers have a duty of care to the people who use their sites and premises – and a legal obligation to make sure they keep occupants and workers safe from asbestos.
